Vision
Our vision of the Bronx is to co-design and implement a bold, long-term and living vision for the Bronx that is grounded in racial justice and economic democracy. This vision should be driven by and reflective of the diverse range of Bronxites who live, work and pray here - those who are shaping The Bronx in their collective imagination so that is is a more sustainable, equitable, healthy and thriving borough.
We believe that all Bronx stakeholders - residents, community groups, schools, businesses, elected officials, and major institutions- have a responsibility to protect our local communities, build and economy that works for all, and create and implement a shared vision for the borough.
In the face of abandonment and disinvestment from the public and private sectors, we organized and empowered ourselves to rebuild and transform our neighborhoods into flourishing communities rich in culture and assets. To ensure that we can call it home for generations to come, we seek to build a regional and democratic economy that centers racial justice, cooperative ownership and decisions making, supports freedom and self determination and prioritized dignity and wellbeing for the many over the profits of the few.
Values
-
Rather than responding to individual issues, we understand that we must look at the root cause of inequalities and work towards transforming systems
-
Given the historic disinvestment in communities of color, we understand that we must have a clear racial justice lens that puts people of color at the center
-
We understand that all voices are important across generations; therefore, we will be inclusive of youth voice and other voices that might be missing from our spaces
-
We know everybody has valuable contributions regardless of their gender identity, and we want to ensure that we center the voices of women and gender nonconforming people that have often been left on the margins.
-
We know that taking care of the Earth is essential for the survival of all of humanity. As communities of color are most impacted by climate change, we must embed environmental sustainability within our solutions and strategies.
-
Fighting back against bad landlords, development and policies have not been sufficient to create shared wealth and ownership over community assets. We must use ‘fight forward’ strategies that will help us create community control and long last impact.
